Video Catches Man Crashing Through Gas Station While Trying to Run Down His Girlfriend

Man Flees Scene of Horrific Crash, Finds Instant Karma A Columbia man is behind bars in Maury County following a series of violent crashes last week at a local gas station.

Erik Whitaker was released from the hospital Wednesday and charged with attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, theft of property and reckless endangerment.

The 40-year-old is being held in the Maury County jail on a $2 million bond after police said he drove his pickup truck through the front glass of the Columbia Market located in the 1200 block of Hampshire Pike last Friday morning, nearly killing the store owner inside.

Police said Whitaker was involved in an argument with an ex-girlfriend and followed her to the gas station where she went for help.

Andrea Kreisel witnessed as Whitaker struck the woman’s Cadillac before crashing into the store front, pinning owner Sam Pate…l, 51, against he wall.

Kreisel, a nurse, told Nashville’s News 2 she stopped to help, pulled up to the station’s gas pumps and ran into the store.

While on the phone with 911, police said Whitaker, who was uninjured, jumped from the wrecked pickup and ran to her SUV outside.

He jumped in and sped from the parking lot but didn’t get very far.  He crashed head-on into a food delivery truck traveling on Hampshire Pike.

Whitaker was seriously injured in the wreck and airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Kreisel only had liability insurance and is now without a car.

“I thought someone may have had a heart attack and drove through the store and I was going to stop and help and be someone’s hero and I turned into a victim,” she recalled.

Still, the mother of three young children says she is just thankful her kids weren’t with her last Friday.

“At the end of the day, it’s just a car and just money. It’s replaceable.  People aren’t,” Kreisel said.

The market clerk is now out of the hospital, recovering.

The driver of the food delivery truck suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Whitaker’s ex-girlfriend was not injured.
